Grand Funk Railroad

gfunk1

American band Grand Funk Railroad, one of the most successful hard rock bands of the 1970s, are bringing "The Loco-Motion" to Las Vegas with their live show at The Orleans Hotel and Casino.

Grand Funk Railroad built its devoted fan base with constant touring and strong working-class appeal. The band was formed by Flint, Mich., guitarist/songwriter Mark Farner and drummer Don Brewer. They recruited bassist Mel Schacher in 1968, and Terry Knight retired from performing to become their manager, naming the group after Michigan's well-known Grand Trunk Railroad.

They performed at the 1969 Atlanta Pop Festival, and their show led Capitol Records to sign them at once. While radio shied away from Grand Funk Railroad, the group still managed to produce a series of big-selling albums over the next few years - five of their eight releases from 1969 to 1972 went platinum, and the others all went gold.

Keyboardist Craig Frost joined the group at the end of 1972. The band's name was officially shortened to Grand Funk, and the group finally scored a No. 1 hit single with "We're an American Band." The follow-up, "Shinin' On," contained another No. 1 hit in a remake of "The Loco-Motion." Reverting back to Grand Funk Railroad, they remained together in 1976 to work with producer Frank Zappa on "Good Singin', Good Playin.'" Farner left for a solo career, and the remainder of the band released an album as Flint with guitarist Billy Elworthy.

Grand Funk Railroad re-formed in 1981 with Dennis Bellinger on bass and released two albums. The group disbanded again, with Brewer and Frost joining Bob Seger's Silver Bullet Band and Farner embarking on a new career as a contemporary Christian artist; his "Isn't It Amazing" was a No. 2 gospel hit in 1988. In 1997, Grand Funk Railroad reunited once again to record a benefit album titled "Bosnia." Two years later, Capitol issued a three-disc box set retrospective, "Thirty Years of Funk: 1969-1999."

In 1998, Farner left the band to continue his solo career. Brewer and Schacher recruited Max Carl, Bruce Kulick and Tim Cashion to join the band. Grand Funk Railroad continues to tour regularly, doing about 40 shows a year.

Vinnie Favorito

vfavorito 3

No one likes a bully, but you'll love Vinnie Favorito. He picks on everyone with his edgy brand of "equal opportunity comedy."

"The beauty of my show is you could be the richest person in the world, but once you're in my show you're in the same tax bracket as the white trash guy sitting behind you. I don't care. Everybody's the same in my book," said Favorito during an interview.

Unlike other comedians who use pre-developed material, Favorito derives his comedy from his interaction with people in the audience.

"I have tons of material that I never use because I always feel like the crowd is a lot funnier than I'll ever be," said Favorito.

Stereotypes are the basis for some of his jokes, but most of the time he is able to create off-the-cuff comedy based on information that he gets from people in the crowd. He begins by greeting individuals and asking them basic questions like "What's your name?" and "Where are you from?" Then Favorito turns their answers into hilarious comedy.

People in the audience can't help but laugh at his free-flowing insults. By the end of the show he has made fun of almost every stereotype, but in doing so he also reminds people that it's okay to laugh at yourself.

"This is why I like doing comedy. You have all walks of life sitting together having a good time," says Favorito.

Donny & Marie

donmarie 5

Standing in the spotlight on a Las Vegas stage is second nature to Donny and Marie Osmond.

The Osmond family has an extensive history with the city. Donny's first gig was at the Sahara hotel opening for Shirley Bassey performing with his brothers at the age of 7.

It was at Caesars Palace during an Osmond show in 1973 that Donny and Marie sang together on stage for the first time, and throughout the '70s, members of the Osmond family played at practically every hotel in Las Vegas, including the Tropicana and the Las Vegas Hilton.

In 2008, the duo opened their production at the Flamingo, aptly titled "Donny & Marie," and haven't looked back. The show is a family-friendly variety show that follows the winning formula of their 1970s TV program, incorporating dancing, humor and all of their hit songs -- both as individuals and as a duo.

The show starts out with Donny & Marie singing a medley of "Get the Party Started," "Dancing in the Streets" and "Knock on Wood," accompanied by a group of talented back up dancers.

They also sing a new song, "Vegas Love," from their latest album -- the first they have recorded together in 30 years.

While they may be best known as a team, both Donny and Marie found significant success as solo artists as well and the show gives them each a chance to highlight their individual achievements.

For Marie's turn in the spotlight, she sings her most well-known song, "Paper Roses," along with some of her other country favorites, accompanied by two guitar players.

She also heats things up with a mash up of "Walk this Way" and "These Boots Were Made for Walking," accompanied by male dancers.

Marie has a strong voice and shows her considerable range by belting out a flawless version of the operatic piece "Pie Jesu."

As everyone knows, it's Donny who was always a little bit rock 'n' roll, and the show switches gears for his solo set.

He appears out of fog on stage in to rock his 1989 comeback hit "Soldier of Love."

Donny, a "Dancing with the Stars" winner, shows off some of his moves and some funky choreography on "Yo Yo" while footage of him and his brothers dancing during the '70s plays on a screen behind the stage.

Even though Donny likes to rock, it was his love ballads that made him an official heartthrob and he doesn't disappoint the longtime fans, singing well-known hits like "Puppy Love," accompanied by footage of him during his teenage years.

"This is the part where all of the women would scream," says Donny in the middle of "Puppy Love," which of course, elicits screams from the female members of the audience. "I've still got it!" he proclaims.

Donny and Marie reunite on stage toward the end of the show, singing some of their classic hits like "Make the World Go Away," "Morning Side of the Mountain" and "Deep Purple."

The intimate 750-seat showroom at the Flamingo is a perfect fit for Donny and Marie, offering a good view from just about any seat and allowing the performers to walk out into the audience and get close to their fans. The classic Vegas-style room features booths and tables and contributes to the feeling of nostalgia the duo evokes with their show.

The Osmonds have both starred on Broadway and they close the show with songs from "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," "Wicked," "The Sound of Music" and more.

Donny and Marie have been crowd pleasers in Vegas since childhood and judging by the fact that they're still consistently selling out shows, they'll continue to be welcome for a long time.

Matt Goss

mgoss3

Singer Matt Goss is bringing audiences back to the days of vintage Vegas with a swinging band, sexy dancers and a classic casino venue.

The show, at the former Cleopatra's Barge (now dubbed the Gossy Room) at Caesars Palace, features a blend of covers and Goss' original songs. Since the show takes place in a lounge smoking is allowed during the show.

Goss sings familiar tunes like "Superstition" by Stevie Wonder and The Eagles' "Hotel California," which he plays with a unique reggae/ska spin.

Goss' dapper attire, blue eyes and smooth voice have drawn the inevitable comparisons to Frank Sinatra and he pays tribute to the legendary singer and the Rat pack era in his show by crooning songs like "Luck Be a Lady" and "I've Got the World on a String."

While the covers are fun, a large part of the show also includes Goss' original songs.

For those who may not be familiar with Goss and his music, he's an accomplished singer and songwriter. Known by his fans as "The Voice," Goss found fame as the lead singer of the British '80s pop group Bros. With 11 Top 40 singles and three Top 20 albums, Bros was one of the biggest acts in the U.K., selling more than 17 million records worldwide.

In 1992, Goss left the band to pursue a solo career. His debut solo album "The Key" was released in 1995. He has also written hits for other chart-topping artists, including the song "Change Me" for Keri Hilson and Akon. His song "It's the End of the Road" was used as the elimination song on the TV show "So You Think You Can Dance." He released the album "Gossy" in 2009 and the single "Firefly" from the album was remixed by DJ Paul Oakenfold.

Besides great singing, Goss' show also features a nine-piece band including a talented horn section. Goss himself sits down at the piano for a song or two and plays the guitar.

While the women in the audience clearly enjoy watching the handsome singer, there's some eye candy for the guys too. The show, produced by Pussycat Dolls creator Robin Antin, features the Dirty Virgins, a troupe of sexy, scantily-clad dancers who perform on stage and sometimes amongst the audience.

The Gossy Room, also known as Cleopatra's Barge, has a rich history at Caesars Palace (it opened in 1970) and is the perfect spot to enjoy the old Vegas vibe of Goss' show. The room, surrounded by red velvet curtains, was remodeled when Goss opened his show there and features new carpet and furnishings. There are small tables with candles on them and cocktail waitresses in long black gowns bring drinks to guests. There is also a small bar in the back of the room. The Gossy Room is a small venue -- there are only about 175 seats -- but it makes the show feel almost like a private performance to which you were invited. The intimate room also allows Goss to connect with fans as he comes out into the audience on certain numbers.

When the show is over, the party doesn't stop. Goss often sticks around after the show to have a cocktail or two and take photos with fans. The party keeps going in the room with a DJ and dancing well into the wee hours of the morning.

Alain Nu - The Man Who Knows

alainnu21

Throughout his entire life, Alain Nu, The Man Who Knows, has been looking at life with an unusual perspective and doing amazing things. Starting at a very early age, with interests in uncanny phenomena, hypnosis, eastern mysticism and illusions, Alain realized for himself a fantastic world of possibilities and interesting explorations.

When he headlines annually at The International Spy Museum with his program, ‘The ESP in Espionage,’ Alain Nu talks about many of the unusual findings made by US Agency-funded experiments while baffling us with a few of his own! Alain has entertained at THREE Presidential Inaugural Balls, for numerous top politicos of Capitol Hill, has publicly predicted The Oscars and The Golden Globe Awards with startling accuracy, and can similarly customize special programs to fit specific themes for all kinds of public and private events.

In his one-man show, Alain Nu utilizes these untold powers to foretell our futures, reveal our unspoken thoughts and create a delightfully entertaining evening of mysterious phenomena that centers on this apparently invisible energy. “Nothing is impossible in my world,” says Alain Nu. “Think about it. L.A. Comedy Club

lacomedy21

The theme song from the beloved '80s and early '90s TV sitcom "Cheers" could easily be used for the L.A. Comedy Club. Not only is it a place where you can take a break from all your worries, but the staff here soon will know your name -- if they don't already.

A large percentage of the L.A. Comedy Club's patrons are locals who have been following the franchise since it was launched several years ago at Palace Station. After a stint in Trader Vic's at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, it moved to downtown's Four Queens and now the show has landed at Bally's Las Vegas.

Inside the venue you'll find the hallmarks of a typical comedy club. A mic and wooden stool are front and center on a large stage that is flanked by two video screens. Clips of practical jokes and bloopers are broadcast to patrons before the show begins. There's a variety of seating options (chairs, tables and booths) -- and no matter where you sit, you'll have a good view.

The format at the L.A. Comedy Club is simple. The bulk of the stage time is given to two well-known road comics. Many of the headliners like Felipe Esparza have competed on NBC's reality laugh fest "Last Comic Standing," while others including Willie Ferrell, Tom Rhodes, Joey Medina, Butch Bradley and Shang have Showtime, HBO or Comedy Central credits to their name.

These headlining comedians are paired with a host from Las Vegas, which is another unique feature of the L.A. Comedy Club. Not only does it offer a top-notch venue for professional comics, but local talent is also nurtured and promoted. Occasionally, a surprise guest or famous friend of a headliner stops by and performs to the delight of customers as well.

John Prine

jprine1

Grammy-winning songwriter John Prine returns to Las Vegas for the first time since 1999 to entertain audiences at The Pearl in the Palms Casino Resort with four decades of songs.

Prine has long been considered a songwriter's songwriter. His talent is well recognized by the recording artists who have performed his songs including Johnny Cash, Bonnie Raitt, the Everly Brothers, John Denver, Kris Kristofferson, Carly Simon, Ben Harper, Joan Baez and many others. In 2005 he was nationally recognized for his talent when he became the first singer / songwriter to read and perform at the Library of Congress. That same year the American Music Awards named him Artist of the Year.

Bob Dylan told The Huffington Post in 2009 that Prine was one of his favorite songwriters, stating: "Prine's stuff is pure Proustian existentialism. Midwestern mindtrips to the nth degree. And he writes beautiful songs."

Long before the awards and accolades, the concerts and the albums, Prine trudged through snow in the cold Chicago winters delivering mail. He began to sing at open mic evenings at the Fifth Peg on Armitage Avenue in Chicago. It was there he would receive his first review from none other than Chicago Sun-Times movie critic Roger Ebert, who called him a great songwriter.

Prine became a central figure in the Chicago folk revival along with Steve Goodman, Bonnie Koloc, Jim Post and Fred Holstein. In 1971, Prine released his self-titled debut album. From there, Prine has continual released albums through the '70s, '80s, '90s and into the new millennium.

In October of 2011, Prine released "The Singing Mailman Delivers." This two-disc archival release features the earliest studio and live recordings from Prine dating back to 1970, one year before his prolific debut album.

Though his own commercial success may be considered small compared to other recording artists, Prine's influence on folk, country and rock music through his songwriting is immense.

Mike Epps

mepps1

Comedian Mike Epps got his start on HBO's Def Comedy Jam and has parlayed that success into more than 30 movie roles and a successful stand-up career.

After success at a stand-up comedy contest in Indiana, Epps relocated to Atlanta, working with the Comedy Act Theater. With encouragement from the owner of the club, Epps, then 21, moved to New York City and tried to make it on the comedy club circuit. Not very successful with traditional clubs, Epps gained popularity with the underground comedy scene and joined HBO's Def Comedy Jam tour in 1995.

Epps' acting career began almost simultaneously, appearing in the film "Strays" in 1996. In 1999, Epps appeared in an episode of "The Sopranos." During a performance at LA's Comedy Store, Epps caught the attention of Ice Cube. Weeks later, after auditioning, Epps earned the role of Day-Day in Ice Cube's film "Next Friday." The duo would go on to do the sequel "Friday After Next" and the New Line comedy "All About the Benjamins."

Epps' acting career has remained steady and he has performed in more than 30 films including a voice role in "Dr. Doolittle 2," "The Hangover" and "The Hangover III," "How High," "The Honeymooners" with Cedric the Entertainer, two Resident Evil movies "Extinction" and "Apocalypse," "The Fighting Temptations," "Sparkle" and "Repentance." Epps won a NAACP Image Award for his role in the Sony Pictures film "Jumping the Broom."

In addition to his current film work, Epps has had two Showtime Comedy specials "Mike Epps: Underrated and Never Faded" and "Mike Epps Presents…" and he has done numerous stand-up shows across the nation.

Shinedown

shinedown21

What seems to qualify as “rock music” has changed a bit over the years. But Shinedown is here to remind us what the phrase really means when they hit the Vegas stage.

Like we said, rock music comes in many forms, but this band likes to rock the opposite of how we like our math tests: hard. Shinedown have placed 11 number one singles on the Billboard Rock chart, including “45,” “Sound of Sadness” and Simple Man.”

So how do you define “rock music?” Shinedown would probably define it as “success.” Or getting punched in the mouth. Depending on the day, we suppose. Check out Shinedown at the Pearl inside the Palms Resort on August 12, 2020.
